Does meeting with his father's ghost drive Hamlet insane?

I think he was very emotionally disturbed, especially during and right after the wedding/coronation, but I don't quite think he was insane. The prospect that he could be able to have some contact with his father and get the answers that he craves makes him manic but he's still completely in his right mind. He's formulating a plan in his head as soon as the ghost bids him to seek revenge.

I feel that Hamlet's meeting the ghost only solidifies his pre existing hatred of Claudius, and serves as a vehicle by which he can take personal revenge.

i dont know if insane is the right word, but Hamlet is definitely something after meeting the ghost of his father. maybe desperate? or single-minded? it seems like this meeting with the ghost will determine the rest of his life (cuz killing a king with reason or not would knda be treason). obsessive i think is the right word, and that can lead to insanity if not kept in-check

I think Hamlet's desire for revenge is what drives him to go to the edge of insanity. I don't think he goes insane, but it causes him to create a radical plan to kill Claudius. He had wanted to get revenge, and the meeting with the ghost is almost like his "permission" to make a plan.

I love the subtitle of your site! :-)

I am currently teaching Macbeth to sophomores. I find — happily — that they actually enjoy it and get a great deal out of it!

Thanks. And, I’m glad to hear it about Macbeth and your sophomores. Way cool.

This is really cool! How would one install a similar “forum” type program on their blog?

Unfortunately, you’d have to become a “subscriber” to Edublogs to have that feature, which costs some $40 to do. However, becoming a subscriber would also get rid of those nasty ads on your blog, but I do not expect any of you to fork over that dough for class. :)
